Cuckoo Connections

Director: we can change the world
A film directed by Robert Bilheimer called “Not My Life” was made to provoke awareness of modern-slavery around the world. The film focuses mainly on 'trafficking, exploitation, and slavery,' which is happening in the world right now. It looks into the lives of 'survivors and anti-traffickers' around the world, and gets their points of view. The director wants to make fixing these problems the 'forefront of public consciousness.' The director was  nominated for the Oscar for an anti-apartheid film he made.

In connecting this to One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey, the biggest connection is between Robert Bilheimer and Randall McMurphy. They both have a real desire to change the lives of people. McMurphy's goal is to change how the hospital is run, because people are being unfairly treated, and Bilheimer wants to change the lives of people who are being trafficked and enslaved in the modern world. However, McMurphy uses himself to try and change what is happening by bothering Big Nurse and her followers, as well as being rebellious against the system that's already in place, while Bilheimer uses the people who have been abused and have survived to make his point that the slavery needs to stop. McMurphy is also using himself directly to make his point, while Bilheimer is using the means of a film to make the world aware of what is going on. Though McMurphy and Bilheimer are doing similar they do it through different means, but their point is clearly made in both ways.

A. Exploitation
1. "Not My Life" features inspiring testimony from survivors; depictions of trafficking, exploitation, and slavery in all parts of the world including forced labor in Africa, street begging and garbage picking in India, sexual trafficking in the United States and Southeast Asia, and various forms of child enslavement and abuse in both North and South America.
2.  benefit unfairly from the work of (someone), typically byoverworking or underpaying them.
3. The man kidnapped the children with his only goal being exploitation.

B. Trafficking
1. While acknowledging that trafficking and slavery are universal crimes, affecting millions of human beings all over the world, "Not My Life" zeroes in on the fact that the vast majority of trafficking and slavery victims are children.
2. The action of dealing or trading in something illegal
3. The men had been involved in trafficking children since before World War II.

C. Dignity
1. Filmed on five continents over four years, "Not My Life" shows survivors and anti-traffickers with dignity and compassion, and depicts the unspeakable practices of traffickers.
2. the state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect
3. The man worked so hard he was regarded with having much dignity in the office.
